Contentment -- When Enough is Enough

*This is a very personal post -- My goal with this is to enlighten and encourage.*

It donned on me today as I was watching the trailer for the movie "Precious" how little we can take for granted at times. In the midst of watching the actor being abused sexually, verbally, and physically, I get a text message from my mother saying, "I am thankful for you today." Tears began to pour. I also saw "The Blind Side" last night. The actor had no home, no initial education, had 2 shirts in which he washed in a sink each night, and one pair of shoes. I acknowledge that real people in America live this way on a daily basis. I have never had to experience that type of lifestyle or treatment and I will presume many of you have not either. I know through our blogging realm, we talk a lot about material things. ...Clothes, cars, our homes, silly drama that really shouldn't matter... Stressing over what to wear, getting disappointed over things that should be shaken off, shopping excessively, creating lists of things wanted.... and more wants.... creating lists of things we label as 'needs' when really, many people sadly label a 'need' as soap or a clean shirt. I look at my shoe storage which contains more than 50 pairs and I feel Ashamed. I feel it is time to get the priorities right and I am grateful for this reality check.

Please do not take this to the extreme, for I am not saying that it is wrong to want certain things. We have all been there from time to time. However, I feel that in my life, a point has come to where enough is enough. I have everything I need.

  3. Great post. Thanks for writing it.

It's hard to fight the urge not to want all the pretty things we see every day. I constantly battle with it. I try to keep in mind that the thrill and joy that comes from obtaining new material items is fleeting. Experiences, time spent with friends and family and acts of helping others are the kinds of things that really make life complete.

  4. I hear ya! After seeing The Blindside I was embarrassed about all of the shopping I'd just done. It's good to have a reality check!

  5. Great post, and I know what you mean and how you feel...I don't know if I should go see Blind Side in the theater. I might start bawling, but I know that we take so many things for granted, and we really should think twice. :)

  7. Girl! I have been thinking about this ever since I watched the blind side! I am so grateful yet ashamed at all I have and my self-centered thoughts.
